Exercise 1. Why is College So Expensive?
College can be pretty great whether it’s the football games, learning about business, history, (1) …………………………, or thousands of other topics… or pizza at four o’clock in the morning. But why has college gotten so expensive?
In 1980, a year of college cost $3,400. Today, the average cost is more than (2) ………………………….
What’s going on? A great deal of blame lies with the government. You see, government tries to help students by (3) …………………………and financial aid. That is a great intention but when government helps pay for things, people (4) ………………………… how much these things cost in the first place…things like (5) …………………………. Whether it’s from the students or the government, colleges get their money. And when the schools know that students have more money to spend (even if it’s the government’s money), they can raise the (6) …………………………. Think about that college town pizza place. If the government provided (7) ………………………… to buy $5 pizzas, we would all cheer right? And we’d want to buy more pizza for a short time, yes. But before long, the higher demand fueled by these (8) …………………………would encourage the pizza place owner to charge more for pizza… knowing that many people were getting government pizza assistance. And this says nothing of the taxpayers stuck (9) ………………………… for the pizza subsidies. So the next time people complain about the high cost of college… explain how government policy that tries to “help” students (10) ………………………… college now actually hurts future students down the road.
Exercise 2. Why Is The Sky Blue?
Hey, everybody. I'm Ben, and here's today's question. Why is the sky blue?
This is one of those questions that (1) …………………………ask all the time, and it's something interesting to think about. So let's start here. When you look at (2) …………………………at night it's black, and there are stars, and there's the moon, and they form these …………………………on that black (3) …………………………. So why is it that during the day the sky doesn't (4) …………………………with the sun acting like just another point of light? I mean, that's exactly what happens on the moon. So why on Earth-- huh, on Earth--does the daytime sky turn (5) …………………………, and all the stars except for the sun seem to disappear during the day? There's a couple things we have to recognize.
First, the sun is an (6) ………………………… bright point of light. It's also much closer to Earth. The second thing to recognize is that the atoms and (7) …………………………in the atmosphere have an effect on the sunlight that passes through them. Also, there's (8) ………………………… that causes light to scatter throughout the sky when it passes through (9) …………………………that have a diameter that's 1/10 that of the wave length or the color of the light. Now, sunlight is made up of all different colors of light. But because of the (10) ………………………… in our atmosphere, the color blue is scattered much more efficiently than all of the other colors. So when you and I look at the sky on a clear day, we can see the sun as a (11) …………………………. And that blueness that we see everywhere else is all of the atoms in the atmosphere scattering blue light toward us. That's because red light, yellow light, green light, all of the (12) ………………………… are not scattered nearly as well and we see the sky as blue as a result.
And that blue color is so bright that it (13) …………………………out all the other stars because they're so dim in comparison. So that's it. That is why the sky is blue.
Thanks so much for watching. We hope you enjoyed this (14) …………………………. And as always, you know what I'll say at this (15) …………………………. Do you want to comment? We have a comment section. Do you want to like? We have a button for that, and subscribe as well. These videos are cool.
These videos are cool. You know, I feel safe saying that all three of these videos are cool.
Exercise 3. Why Does So Much Food Go To Waste?
- Here are three easy ways you can (1) ………………………… food waste in your own home. One is use the whole vegetable. Things like using carrot tops to make pesto or (2) ………………………… a carrot if it gets old but too wilty. Use the whole vegetable help you (3) ………………………… food waste. Number two thing you can do is when you're putting away vegetables in your fridge, (4) ………………………… it in a first in, first out way, meaning what you bought (5) …………………………, put it on the bottom. And if you have older product, put it on the top so you use that first before it (6) …………………………………………………… The third thing you can do is what I call the (7) …………………………. And so that means, if you're worried that the food is going bad,
don't necessarily look at (8) …………………………but open it up and sniff if yourself. If it smells funky, toss it. But if it smells (9) …………………………, it's probably safe to eat and you can go ahead and (10) …………………………that from going to waste.
Exercise 4. Why The Full Moon is Better in Winter
Winter is unquestionably the best season - for skiing. And for full moons. We're lucky enough to have winters because the earth's plane of (1) ………………………… is tilted relative to its orbit. This means that when part of the earth is tilted towards the sun, the sun stays in the sky for a (2) ………………………… of time each day, and it's warm out. Summer! Of course, when that part of the earth is tilted away from the sun, the sun is lower in the sky and doesn't stay up as long. This might (3) …………………………, but you can think of it as bonus time pointing towards (4) ………………… ……… space! And, as I said before, winter has the best full moons.
The moon is new when it's on the same side of the earth as the sun, and it doesn't (5) ………………………… on us. This also means the new moon generally mirrors the sun on its journey across the sky - it more or less rises and sets with the sun and follows a (6) ………………………… . On the other hand, the moon is full when it's on the opposite side of the earth from the sun, its (7) whole face reflecting the sun's light back at us. Because of this opposite position, a full moon is only ever up at night, rising at sunset and setting at sunrise, and it (8) ………………………… also behaves the way the sun does in the opposite season. When a part of the earth is tilted towards the full moon, it's tilted away from the sun - and vice versa. So a summer full moon is like a winter sun - only appearing for a few hours and staying close to the (9) …………………………. But a winter full moon is like a summer sun - it's up for a long time and takes a high path through the sky. In the darkest months, the moon, at least
