Tấm and Cám were step-sisters who had the same father but different mothers. Tấm’s mother died when she was still a toddler. A few years later, her father also passed away. Tấm lived with her stepmother and her daughter, Cám.
Everyday Tấm had to work hard from dawn to dark, while Cám was spoiled by her mother and would while away the time, one day after another. One day, Cam's mother told the two sisters to go out into the paddy field to catch small shrimps, offering the prize of a red bodice to whoever could fill her basket.
