The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species is the best-known worldwide conservation status listing and ranking system. The list is a checklist of species that have undergone an extinction risk assessment using the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria. According to this, species are grouped into seven major categories describing the endangered status of the animal. The first one is “Least Concern” - the species has a widespread and abundant population – goes by common bottlenose dolphin, a species who resides in nearly half of the world’s ocean. The second one is “Near Threatened” - the species may qualify as endangered in the near future – for instance, the Ball Python, a species whose population is in decline, though not yet steeply enough to be considered “endangered”. The third one is “Vulnerable Species” with 30-50% population decline. For example, the Giant Panda, whose population has shrunk in our lifetime but is on the increase from 2016. The forth one is “Endangered Species” with 50-70% population decline like White-bellied Pangolin, a species whose population is decreasing rapidly as humans hunt them for their scales. Further down we have “Critically Endangered” with up to 80-90% population decline. One famous representative for this category is Bornean Orangutan, whose population and habitat are both shrinking quickly. The next category is “Extinct in the Wild” - the species only exists in captivity or outside its established range. Spix’s Macaw is one good example. This species only exists in captivity now. At the end of the list, we have “Extinct” whose no animals from this species are known to exist on Earth. One well-known example for this category is the Thylacine, aka the Tasmanian Tiger, which now takes the most public attention and effort from scientists who are trying to bring back this species.

Question 9: How many groups of species are there to describe the endangered status of the animal?

B. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species is controversial.

C. More than half the population of species categorized as critically endangered declined.
