There are many social issues nowadays, even in countries with a strong (25)___________. We are used to seeing photographs of hungry people in poor countries, in Africa, for example, or in places which have suffered from many years of war with neighbouring countries or within their own borders. But it still comes as a surprise to see how poor some people can be in a developed country, in Europe, for example. The fact is that in many highly developed countries the inequality between rich people and poor people is very great.
In most developed countries, there is a system of social care in which the government gives money to the poorest people so that they can buy food for themselves and their children. But there is another problem which governments have struggled to deal with. There are many families in European countries and in the USA who haven’t got any (26)___________ from the weather because they are homeless. There are simply not enough houses for all the people in some developed countries, so rents are high. This is clearly a serious problem if you are unemployed, but even if a person has a job, they may not be able to pay for a room to sleep in. That is hard to (27)___________, but it is true.
Western countries are suffering from another social problem which is getting worse every year. For a large number of people, mealtimes are not seen as social occasions anymore. People work long hours and don’t have time to cook healthy food, so they fill (28)___________ on fast food most days. As a result, (29)___________ is rising in some Western countries, even among young children.

Hi, I’ve had an awful cold this week, so I wasn’t sure I could write my weekly blog, but I feel better today. I was afraid that it might turn into flu, but I never got a fever or anything like that. Just a sore nose from blowing it all the time, a headache and a sore throat, which I get with every cold. If my grandmother were still alive, she would say, ‘Feed a cold, starve a fever’, by which she meant you should eat if you have a cold and not eat anything if you had a fever. I looked it up once and found out that it was not true, because your body needs nutrients to fight any illness, including colds and fevers. My grandmother was full of home remedies for every kind of illness, and most of them probably didn’t work. But I know for a fact that a few do. Honey on a wound, like a cut from a knife, is a good one, and ginger root for burns is another. It seems crazy, because ginger is spicy, but holding a piece of ginger against the burn really works. There is an old saying: ‘A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down’, but my grandma used a spoonful of sugar for hiccups – you know, when you keep making that noise which sounds like ‘hic’. I used to get them for hours, but she was staying in our house once when I got them, and she told me to swallow some sugar. It worked! I quickly looked it up on the web, and it seems that you have to work so hard to get the sugar down your throat that it stops the next hiccup coming up. |
