With the progression of technology and the development of existing inventions, it is becoming more difficult for inventors to make money. It feels like people are running out of new ideas. However, there is hope! While becoming a successful inventor is increasingly more difficult, the community of inventors is growing, helping each other to reach their goals.
What makes the inventors’ community so strong? Well, the main reason that people choose to become an inventor is to help others or to make the world a better place to live. With such a goal, why wouldn’t they want to help each other? Inventors often work together, create their own businesses and give opportunities to those in need.
Social media such as Facebook and YouTube have also helped the inventors’ community. They have made it easier for inventors from across the globe to speak with each other and learn from each other through videos. Now that the internet is growing rapidly, there is endless information for inventors aspiring to get what they need.
Still, becoming an inventor is not getting easier with all this extra information. There is more competition, there are more people wanting to make the world better, to make people’s lives easier. This is because they now have all the information they need to make their dreams come true. On the plus side, with all the information and support, it has become easier for anyone to try. Sometimes, great things can be achieved just by accident! We call these “Happy Accidents”. Let’s take a look at some happy accidents that led to amazing inventions.
George Crum was an American chef working at a restaurant when a customer complained that his french fries were too thick and soft. Crum got increasingly angry every time the customer brought back his french fries, still complaining that they were too thick. Eventually, to annoy the customer, Crum sliced the potatoes as thin as he could. He fried them up and put salt all over them, then served them to the customer. And you know what? The customer loved them! And thus, the potato chip was born.
In 1905, an eleven-year-old boy named Frank Epperson wanted some soda. His parents wouldn’t let him get any, so he decided to make his own. He mixed some sugary powder with water and stirred it with a wooden stirrer. At some point, Epperson went inside his home, forgetting his concoction outside. The next morning when he remembered that he had left his juice outside, he went to fetch it only to discover that it had been frozen by the cold air! He ate up the frozen juice, with the wooden stirrer being the perfect handle. He patented this idea in 1924, and Popsicles are still sold and enjoyed worldwide today.
So, don’t worry next time you make a mistake. Think about it – it could lead to the next big invention!
